Biography
Pam RuBert was born in St. Louis and currently lives in Springfield, Missouri. She shares a studio in an old peanut butter factory with her husband Russ RuBert, a sculptor who creates public art and gallery installations. Pam started making art quilts in 2004. Since then her work has been featured in Quilt National and a PBS documentary and has won awards in the Husqvarna Viking Exhibition and International Quilt Festival. In 2009 her quilts will be featured in books that will be published by Voyageur Press and North Light Books.
Artist Statement
As long as I can remember, I have drawn and doodled. My drawings have appeared in many forms, but love of the handcrafted object inspired me to combine my drawings with quilts. I like to orchestrate elements of color, pattern, line, and texture into a story, often working large so I have room to add stories within the story. Sometimes when I'm alone in my studio, I find myself laughing out loud. Ive always believed humor and creativity are linked; maybe both are related to the ability to step outside of ourselves and see things from unexpected viewpoints.
Many of my quilts feature a woman called PaMdora who views the world around her with a mixture of astonishment and disbelief. My everyday life is the seed for these quilts, and although these stories are embellished to fantastic ends, elements are real to me -- and I find, to many people. I enjoy sharing these connections. Its a way to bring us a little closer together, and if I also make you smile or laugh, thats even better.
