Biography

A winner of national and international awards, Jill Rumoshosky Werner's art is regularly exhibited in prestigious juried shows throughout the United States and in other parts of the world. The Kansas Arts Commission awarded her a Mid-Career Artist Fellowship in 2008, a mini-fellowship in 2000 and she was on the selection panel for the 2001 mini-fellowship awards. Her work has been published in American Craft magazine, exhibited in the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and is in the collection of the International Quilt Study Center.

Jill grew up in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She holds a Masters degree in audiology and once worked for a leading hearing aid manufacturer in Minnesota, where she published the first research on in-the-ear hearing aids. After moving to Kansas in 1977, Ms. Werner worked as a software technical writer for NCR and then as a systems engineer for IBM. She became a full time artist in 1999 and currently lives in Wichita with her husband.

Artist Statement

My current artwork is like a dictionary. I show the viewer what a word looks like when it's defined strictly through visual means.

The soft elements in my designs are provided by quilts of unusual proportions. I use quilts as my raw material, creating the lines and forms of my creations, because people connect with quilts on a deep level, making the artwork more accessible.

My ideas come from a wide range of influences, from the architect Frank Gehry to minimalist art to Art Deco design. Into this mix, add some scientific imagery and the work of Eva Hesse. The result is a new way of looking at quilts, which takes them into the realm of sculpture and installation art.
