July 12, 2009 Sunday
** 9 - 10 am - Private breakfast on the second floor for the exhibiting artists and their guests.
10 am - noon - Demonstration of mud painting by fiber artist Heather Clark Hilliard of Oklahoma City.
Mud and earth pigments were the first materials used by humans to color our walls and architecture, ceremoniously celebrate and cleanse our bodies, and pattern our cloth. Most colors today are derived from petrochemical substances, but the wide ranging eco-palette of yellows, browns, greens, violets, reds, and even blues holds many possibilities for the contemporary artist.
Come join us
to learn about surface design using earth pigments as a contemporary medium
for applying color to cloth. Using soy milk as the binder, the demonstration
will show how to mix and apply earth and
mineral pigments to cloth. Discussion of the permanence and setting of earth
color will be addressed. Various tools and techniques will be demonstrated as
options for creating surface designs with unique marks and expressions. We will
discuss the traditional designs and processes that are executed with exceptional
artisan capabilities and still practiced today.
Whether it is a process steeped in cultural symbolism for each rite of passage or a modern application for surface designers, each mud and earth cloth tells a story. There will be examples of color palettes, books and other resources, examples of bogolan, and information about collecting your own local mud.
